Technical Cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Since 2009, BGR has been supporting the establishment of Disaster Risk Management institutions in Pakistan with capacity building regarding hazard and risk exposure analyses. Up to 2015, the cooperation partner was the Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP), Islamabad. Since 2017, BGR has been supporting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority KP (PDMA KP) on a sub-national level in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Development cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is structured through the priority programmes Good Governance, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development.
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is not a member of the "Least Developed Countries" group, but due to its geographical location in an Asian crisis region, it is a focal partner in the region. Despite economic growth of 4.2% (2013), the share of the population below the national poverty line is still around 30%. It is expected that the population of about 208 million (2017) will almost double in 30 years at a growth rate of more than 2%/year. Environmental problems are alarming due to the sharp increase in population. Untreated waste water and household and industrial waste contaminate drinking water. Deforestation, soil erosion and desertification reduce agricultural production while at the same time increasing demand.
Jointly with GIZ, BGR supports the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in disaster management. The aim of the BGR component is to improve living conditions in the earthquake region of northern Pakistan by assessing natural hazards and the respective risk exposure enabling the Authorities to implement preventive measures for disaster risk reduction.
