AEGOS (African-European Georesources Observation System) is an international research project funded by the 7th EU Research Framework "Cooperation". The aim is to establish a pan-African spatial data infrastructure and to provide information and user-oriented products on mineral resources, non-energy raw materials, groundwater and geothermal energy.
Using a metadata catalog, information and spatial data on the geopotential of African countries can be searched in a web-based information system.
The project creates the basis for capacity building in IT infrastructure and human development in the participating organizations.

Standards and Technology:

Provisioning, documentation and data modeling is performed according to the standards of the "Open Geospatial Consortium" (OGC) and the "International Organization for Standardization" (ISO) as well as on the basis of interoperable software components. This should ensure (the) exchange of information independently from system and software.

The expected results can be summarized as follows:

  • Development and strengthening of the institutional African-European partner network
  • Global provision of metadata, data and information on the geopotential of Africa
  • Contributions to the work of the European project GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) and
  • Provision of operational procedures for data management (spatial data infrastructure, metadata and data)
  • providing user-oriented products and services.

Schedule:

The stage from December 2008 until May 2011 is designed for defining the specifications of actions and activities. In a possible, following phase (probably from 2015) this actions and activities can be implemented.

Participation BGR:

Together with the Southern and Eastern African Mineral Centre (SEAMIC) based in Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) leads the work package 6 (WP 6) "Definition of Common Strategies for Capacity Building and Training".

In this work package the level of education at the African partner institutions is to be determined. For this purpose, planning workshops are hold with project partners, questionnaires are developed, potential training centers are contacted and enquiries are done. This allows an evaluation of the necessary training for building a pan-African spatial data infrastructure. On this basis, the teaching content is defined for the implementation phase.
